Introduction

The basis of the master plan is the “Development concept for restructuring the Old Port areas in Bremen” adopted by the Bremen Senate and Parliament in 2000. The master plan formulates the urban planning development concept for transforming the port areas on the right bank of the Weser. It is a tool for informal planning.

From the city centre the planning area extends over a length of 4.5 km and a width of up to 1.0 km. River banks, quays, embankments and fences border the approximately 300 hectares and thus have a sustained influence on the urban landscape and architecture. Within this area specific spatial characteristics are created by the differences that have emerged in the neighbourhoods over time.
